What are the...

ABCDEs of Suspicious Growths?

Recognizing early signs of skin cancers can help treat and prevent development of potential malignant growths. Our team follows the ABCDEs when evaluating moles and skin lesions. If any of your lesions manifest these signs, seek the help of our surgical dermatologist right away.
Asymmetrical Shape

Normally, moles and other growths are symmetrical and are less than ¼ inch in size. One feature of a potential malignant growth is when a symmetrical mole turns to an irregular shape.

Color changes

Benign moles have uniform color. Melanomas, on the other hand, show a mix of two or more color shades. Some are in the shades of black and brown, others are red or blue.

Evolving

Most benign moles just look the same over the years. When a mole evolves in shape, color, size, or develops a symptom like itching, bleeding, or crusting, this can be potentially dangerous.

Border changes

Blemishes and marks are typically oval or round in shape. They also have smooth borders. When these blemishes turn notched, blurry, or have rugged borders, they may be a sign of precancerous growths.

Diameter growth

A mole or growth that grows larger than a quarter of an inch may suggest melanoma.
